It was a big day today....my 86 year old grandfather was honored by the Governor, along with 32 other Worthy people here in the state of Maine at the State Capital! He was a pilot in the army and some of the things he went through in war are amazing. I love looking at old pics of him from the 30's and 40's. I must admit I allow myself to forget sometimes, that "old' people were once my age! They did more than sit with warm blankets on their laps, watch Jeopardy and do puzzles! My grandfather has Parkinson's Disease, but his mind is in full tact. My grandmother died in September of '08, and would have been so proud. Here they are, on their wedding day! It was a second marriage for both of them. He is actually my step-grandfather, but the only grandfather I really ever knew, so Real to me. :)

After the Ceremony at the Capital, we all (20 of us) went to lunch, and HE paid!! He really wanted to treat us all. So sweet. He is so quiet, just observing his daughter, son, daughter-in-law, grand-daughters and grand-sons, grand-son's-in-law, and many small great grandchildren! It was very special. The first time I ever drove a car, I was 10......!! Sat on Grampa's lap and did the steering while he did the pedals! His passion was flying, and he lived 1/2 mile from a small airport before having to move to a nursing home. I flew with him when I was a teenager, and he would let me fly the small "2 person" plane! Once, I even landed one!! He was so comfortable in a plane. He talks now of having his own wings when his Jesus returns, and takes us home!
This was an interesting post.....April Fool's updates, and some sentimental words about Grampa!
Sounds like you'll be having fun in years to come on April 1!!
ReplyDeleteI love the story of your grandfather!
GG sounds like me as a child trying to trick everyone. I would have totally believed the LM poop story too!
ReplyDeleteI read this late last night but didn't take time to comment (only a thanks for sharing). It's amazing how much we can learn from just being in the same room with older people. I miss my Grandpa so much and think on the stories he used to tell me and the time we spent together. The memories we have will last forever and I'm glad you got to spend that special occasion with your Grampa.
This was a great post; much better than pulling a April Fool's prank on us. It was better reading about the one pulled on YOU (LOL).
ReplyDeleteWhat a heartwarming post. Congrats to your Grandfather!
